India is known to be a sportsman loving country, rather than a sports loving country, and there is no doubt that this contest will be talked about as a Kohli versus Dhoni contest. Then again, one must remember that the captain is only as good as his team and Chennai appear to be the better team at present.

Not only have Chennai won close games, but they have found a couple of new match winners with the bat and ball in each game. The latest round of heroics came from Rayudu, who took Chennai from a below average score to a formidable one. If that wasn’t enough, Deepak Chahar swung the fortunes their way with a beautiful display of swing bowling!

Bangalore, on the other hand, are coming on the back of a win against the hapless Delhi, thanks largely to AB de Villiers’ 39 ball unbeaten 90. Their bowling, apart from Umesh Yadav, has failed to withstand the pressure of top quality batting and that has left them exposed time and time again.

Now that all of their top order batsmen are in form, Chennai will look to milk a few easy runs against the Bangalore bowling attack. They will also be aware of the fact that on a given day, any one of Kohli, de Villiers and Quinton de Kock can win a game single handedly! The latter is yet to make a significant contribution, and Bangalore would be hoping for some fireworks from him to get their tournament up

Match Stats:

The powerplay for both teams should make for an exciting contest as the bowlers who have taken most wickets in this season’s powerplay overs would be pitted against each other – Umesh Yadav with seven wickets and Deepak Chahar with six wickets

Chennai have had six fifty plus scores from their batsmen this season and all of them have been by different players!

In Bangalore wins, AB de Villiers averages 82.85 and has scored 1740 runs at a strike rate of 177.55

Match Teams :

Chennai XI team: SR Watson, AT Rayudu, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, DJ Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Sam Billings, Karn Sharma

Hyderabad were affected by the injury to Dhawan and will be glad to have him back. However, it would be the contributions of wicketkeeper Saha, all-rounder Deepak Hooda and middle order batsman Manish Pandey which would be a worry for them. Saha averages 12.40 with the bat this season with a highest score of 24 while Hooda has made just one meaningful contribution of 32 not out from four innings. He has only scored 11 runs from his three other innings. The same applies for Pandey, who has had one knock of 57 not out and 31 runs from his other four hits with the bat. The time has probably come for Sreevats Goswami to get a game with the gloves and for Sachin Baby to get a look in for one of the two struggling batsmen.

Punjab too have similar problems and their reliance on the opening partnership of Rahul and Gayle was exposed in the last game. The trio of Aaron Finch, Yuvraj Singh and Mayank Agarwal have batting averages of 5.33, 12.50 and 18.60 this season and have struggled to score runs against quality bowling. Yuvraj has looked past his prime and has struggled against quality fast bowling. It will be interesting to see if Punjab make the tough call of benching him for Manoj Tiwary, who had a decent season for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017.

Batting woes apart, this match promises to be a contest between two captains who have marshalled their troops brilliantly. While Kane Williamson is an established international captain, Ravichandran Ashwin has certainly made a case for himself. One cannot help but give credit to the bowlers of both sides for executing their captains plans with success.

Head to Head :

Hyderabad 8 - 3 Punjab

Match Stats:

Hyderabad are the only team to defend a total of 120 and less twice in the IPL. Prior to their last game, they had successfully defended 119 against the now defunct Pune Warriors India in the 2013 season

Yuvraj’s best IPL season in terms of runs was when he scored 376 runs in 2014 for Bangalore. That is two runs more than what Chennai’s Raina had managed in his worst season (374 in 2015)

Match Teams :

Punjab XI team: CH Gayle, Lokesh Rahul, AJ Finch, Mayank Agarwal, Yuvraj Singh, Karun Nair,Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohit Sharma, Andrew Tye, Barinder Sran, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Axar Patel, Marcus Stoinis, Mayank Dagar

The decision to drop Gambhir, one of the most successful captains and batsmen in the tournament, may have been a tough one but Ricky Ponting has done that to himself in the past and is not shy of taking bold decisions. Franchises mean business at the end of the day and will look for results irrespective of the sentiments attached to a decision. Under-19 captain Prithvi Shaw showed his class in the last game and vindicated the management’s decision to stick to him over the senior pro Gambhir.

All of a sudden, Delhi looked like the team which was supposed to be one of the favorites at the start of the tournament. They batted beautifully with Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, Colin Munro and Maxwell all among the runs and then their bowlers backed them up. Yes, Trent Boult went for some runs, but he managed to set the tone early in the innings by dismissing two of the top three Kolkata batsmen. Avesh Khan was impressive once again while Amit Mishra found his groove for the first time this season.

Chennai, on the other hand, had a rare bad they with the bat as they gave the Mumbai a chance to stay alive in the tournament. While Rayudu and Raina continued their fine form, they struggled to find the firepower later in the innings. Skipper Dhoni was quick to acknowledge the fact that losses make a team humble and they will no doubt be learning from their mistakes.

The Chennai team management will be in a spot of bother as they look to find a replacement for their pace spearhead Deepak Chahar, who has been ruled out for two weeks with a hamstring injury. It will be interesting to see if the bring in another Indian youngster to beef up their bowling or alter their overseas balance to bring in someone like a David Willey or Mark Wood.

Head to Head:Chennai 11 - 5 Delhi

Match Stats:

During his knock of 93 not out in the last game, Shreyas Iyer became the first captain to hit 10 sixes in an IPL innings. He also became the first DD player to hit 10 sixes in an IPL innings

Delhi last match brought an end to Gambhir record of captaining in 122 straight IPL matches for teams they played

Prithvi Shaw has had an amazing start to his career so far – he has five hundreds from ten first class games, has won an under-19 World Cup as captain, scored a fifty in just his second IPL game and had scored 546 in a school tournament in Mumbai. He is only just 18 years of age!
